Review by Shrewsbury Town fan Jane Pittaway
Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?
Big replay for us in the FA Cup. I’ve been to Anfield before to support Liverpool (second team) but this was an opportunity to see my home team Shrewsbury Town (season ticket holder) play there.
How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?
On one of the 100 coaches. Awful journey which took over 3.5 hours for what should be less than 2 hour journey. Kick off was delayed thankfully and we just made it.
What did you think of the food and drink available inside the ground?
Very unhappy. Rushed in to take seats just as teams coming out. Starving as left home at 4pm. Went to get food at half time and they had run out!!! Survived on crisps and chocolate. Lots of very unhappy away supporters!
What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?
View was fine. Stewards were not knowledgeable about seating though. Couldn’t tell us which side of the aisle to go for our seat. Another tried to move a young girl and her dad from the row in front of us and the steward had got the completely wrong row! This was during the game so obscured our view for a few minutes unnecessarily. The seats are ridiculously compact. I’m not large by any stretch and I had to twist sideways to fit between two people who weren’t huge. Very uncomfortable. Not enough ladies toilets.
What was the atmosphere like during the match?
Good at our end. Sadly not so much atmosphere coming from the home end but did enjoy YNWA.
How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?
Awful as there were evening roadworks on the main route out!
How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?
£40! Great value!
Would you recommend this away day to other fans?
Hmmm. Maybe if they could guarantee food availability and increase the seating space in their new proposals then yes.
Is there anything else you want to tell other away fans about your day?
I didn’t like the way they split the men from women when lining up to go in. Unnecessary in my opinion. Also they had slip mats at the bottom of the concourse steps up into the stand. People kept tripping over them!
Review by Leicester City fan Jamie
Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?
I’ve supported my club home and away for the past 20 years, and with us having a genuine chance of getting top 4 this season, it was too good to turn down. I’ve never been to Anfield myself, plus it was Brendan Rodgers first game back at Anfield, so that was an interesting subplot.
How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?
Got a lift in my mates car, traffic wasn’t too bad.
If you drove, was it easy to find car parking and make your way to the stadium?
Car parking was fine, we parked up roughly a 20 minute walk away from the Anfield Road end.
Where did you eat on your away day and was it good value?
Had a few pies and drinks from some of the vans near the ground which were reasonably priced.
What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?
View was ok, somewhat obstructed by the large overhanging roof but could see most of the pitch.
What was the atmosphere like during the match?
Both fans trying to sing each other out. Credit to the Liverpool fans, even when Maddison scored they sang louder to gee their team up. YNWA was pretty epic to listen to. That said, when we equalised some of the home fans decided to leave their seats, which was quite surprising and disappointing.
How friendly were the home fans out of 10?
9/10
How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?
Relatively straightforward, although we managed to forget exactly where we parked the car so we wasted 15 mins!
How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?
Including fuel, food and tickets, spent roughly £100.
Would you recommend this away day to other fans?
100%. Gutted about the result and the last second penalty, but it’s all about enjoying yourself at the end of the day. Also, don’t forget to donate some food for the Food Bank run by fans – really charitable cause helping those less fortunate than us.
Is there anything else you want to tell other away fans about your day?
Amazing day out!
Review by Cardiff City fan Ryan Thomas
Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?
I went because I’m a Cardiff City fan and also to have a weekend away in Liverpool.
How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?
I travelled by car. It took over 4 and a half hours. The M6 was a nightmare!
If you drove, was it easy to find car parking and make your way to the stadium?
We parked at an air bnb and then took a taxi from Penny Lane which was £10.
Which pubs did you go to before the game and what was the atmosphere like?
The Flat Iron, which had a decent atmosphere.
What did you think of the food and drink available inside the ground?
The queue for drinks and food at half time was ridiculous. By time I got to till they stopped serving alcohol.
What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?
I like the away end, but couldn’t see left corner very well.
What was the atmosphere like during the match?
Good from Cardiff fans, awful from Liverpool fans.
How friendly were the home fans out of 10?
8/10
How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?
Not easy. Taxis get fully booked.
If you stayed over, where did you stay and was it convenient for getting to the stadium?
Yes, we stayed over in an Airbnb in Penny Lane, which was a 20 minute taxi to Anfield.
How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?
I spent over £100 and I think it was value for money.
Would you recommend this away day to other fans?
Yes, definitely!
Is there anything else you want to tell other away fans about your day?
The Arkles pub by the ground only allowed people in aged over 25. The Flat Iron is good but slow service at times. If you are staying then pre-book taxis. Atmosphere of home fans is poor. Liverpool night life is very good.
Review by Wolves fan Andrew Bateman
Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?
I chose to go to this match because my football team is Wolves, and I follow them up and down the country. I was going to make no exception for a big cup tie like this. I went to the match expecting Wolves to get thrashed, but to see my team who were at the time in the Championship, away at a big Premier League ground, I simply couldn’t miss this opportunity.
How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?
I travelled to the game on an unofficial coach. We set off from a pub at around 7 o’clock in the morning, as we were the 12:30 kick off that day, and after a few stops along the line, we got to Anfield roughly 20 minutes before kick off. It was extremely easy, but I suppose that’s just the coaches for you. They’re never difficult as long as you know what you’re doing.
Which pubs did you go to before the game and what was the atmosphere like?
We went to a Wetherspoons in Wallasey, which is near Birkenhead, not far away from Liverpool.
What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?
My view was terrible. I was in the bottom tier of the stand and the view of the ground was slightly blocked off by the roof of the stand, this was because we were so far back in the lower tier, but it didn’t really bother me much throughout the day.
What was the atmosphere like during the match?
Never heard Wolves fans in finer voice. From the first minute to the last, we were chanting all game. I supposed it helped that Richard Stearman scored within 58 seconds and that gave the crowd more to sing about.
How friendly were the home fans out of 10?
10/10 although I didn’t hear a peep from them all game.
How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?
I found it easy because all I had to do was find my coach. It didn’t take long to get back either.
How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?
It was just £5 for a ticket and around £15 for the coach, plus the food and drinks in the pubs. So in total around £30, which is less than the average and so definitely good value for money.
Would you recommend this away day to other fans?
In honesty, the away end at Anfield is hard to get tickets, especially for Premier League fans. If you can get tickets, then definitely go and support your team, and most importantly, make sure you actually enjoy yourself regardless of the result.
