Review by Ipswich Town Fan Jackie Calver

Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?

Chose this away game as I’d never been to Swansea before. We booked a hotel for 2 nights to make the most of it.

How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?

We travelled by car which is relatively straight forward from Ipswich.

If you drove, was it easy to find car parking and make your way to the stadium?

We left the car at the hotel but we did see a Car park next to stadium that I assume away fans can use.

Which pubs did you go to before the game and what was the atmosphere like?

We went into The Harvester pub next door to stadium which is great for away fans for food and beers.

Where did you eat on your away day and was it good value?

We had breakfast in The Bank statement which is a Wetherspoons in Swansea city centre. It’s around a 30 minute walk to the stadium from there.

What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?

I had a brill view where I sat but some stewards were saying we sit where we wanted but other stewards were saying we had to sit where our ticket said, so that was confusing.

What was the atmosphere like during the match?

The atmosphere was brilliant.

How friendly were the home fans out of 10?

10/10 – no problem at all.

If you stayed over, where did you stay and was it convenient for getting to the stadium?

We stayed at the Premier inn on the waterfront. It was just a 10 minute walk to the city centre, and then we got a taxi to the ground which cost £6.50.

How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?

Loads of money. Hotel for 2 nights. Meals, beer, taxis, all adds up!

Would you recommend this away day to other fans?

Yes definitely! Would recommend staying the night in Swansea as the nightlife is amazing. Clubs, pubs and food outlets are just brilliant.

Is there anything else you want to tell other away fans?

Swansea people are so friendly. I can’t fault anything about the place.

Review by Leeds United Fan Rob Harvey

Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?

Leeds had made a great start to the season and my son had a spare ticket so, as I’d never been to the Liberty before, I jumped at the chance to go.

How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?

We drove down, which from West Yorkshire was a 5-hour journey but motorway/dual carriageway all the way so not too bad. As it was a midweek game we hit the M4 around Cardiff & Newport right in the rush hour which slowed us up quite a bit though.

If you drove, was it easy to find car parking and make your way to the stadium?

Away fans seem to be advised to use the park & ride facility but having researched parking before we set off we parked in the Landore park & walk which is right next to the stadium and the same price as the park & ride (£6). It’s a large car park so if you arrive in plenty of time you should easily get a space there.

Which pubs did you go to before the game and what was the atmosphere like?

We didn’t go in the pub, although the Harvester right next to the ground had been taken over by Leeds fans. The atmosphere outside the ground was friendly and there were lots of Leeds fans wandering around in team colours with no hassle.

Where did you eat on your away day and was it good value?

We ate at the KFC in the retail park just across the river bridge from the Liberty and it was the worst KFC I have ever had! The queues were out of the door (to be expected on match day I suppose) and the system behind the counter seemed to have broken down. I had to chase up my order as I was standing waiting for over 15 minutes and when it arrived the fries were lukewarm and the chicken was awful. To be fair to the staff they were trying their best under difficult circumstances but I wouldn’t recommend eating there at all. As we left (about 40 minutes before kick off) I doubted that the people at the back of the queue would have eaten in time for it.

What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?

The away end was good – a good view with lots of leg room and no obstructions. We were in the lower tier, which is the smaller area for away fans but still better than most other grounds I’ve been to.

What was the atmosphere like during the match?

The atmosphere was brilliant. Leeds had sold out their allocation of 2,099, which was fantastic for a midweek game, and the Swansea fans were well up for it. The home fans that sing are at the side of the ground to the left of the away end and are right up into the corner next to you which makes for a close encounter! They were really noisy and passionate and were spurred on by a bloke with a drum. I thought they were amongst the best home fans I’ve encountered and the fact that it was an exciting

2-2 draw, with Leeds equalising twice, meant that both sets of supporters had good reason to get behind their team.

How friendly were the home fans out of 10?

The ones I spoke to outside the ground were very friendly and there was no animosity at all – unlike when we play their neighbours Cardiff. I would give them a 10! Inside the ground, as with most fans, they look like they want to kill you with lots of insults and gestures being exchanged across the short divide between them and our away following, but that’s just part and parcel of a cracking atmosphere for me and it never felt threatening.

How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?

We didn’t have to suffer the usual lock-in after the final whistle and were able to get back to our car quite quickly, passing through the home fans on the way with no trouble. Getting out of the car park was slow and the road back to the M4 past the Liberty is closed after the game, but the guy on the gate when we arrived had advised me to turn right at the first roundabout and then left at the next which was an alternative route back to the motorway and flowed quite well.

How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?

Other than petrol money, parking, the match ticket and the dodgy KFC we didn’t spend anything else so it was good value for such a long day out. Could have saved a few quid and not bothered with the KFC though!

Would you recommend this away day to other fans?

I guess for most other clubs’ supporters this will be one of the longest away journeys for them but I would highly recommend it. The Liberty is a nice stadium and the atmosphere is great.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your day?

Just be aware that if, like us, your game is midweek it seems that lots of motorway repairs are done at night. We found the M4 closed twice between Swansea and Newport and had to follow diversions, and then closures on the M42 and M1 too so we didn’t get back to Leeds until 3.00am.
