Review by Ipswich Town fan Richard Green

Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?

I have visited every ground in League 1 and Championship in the last 2 seasons following Ipswich Town. I was looking forward to our usual welcome and to watch an exciting game.

How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?

I travelled by car from the Birmingham area, which was relatively easy via M5 and M40. The return journey via M1 was more problematic.

If you drove, was it easy to find car parking and make your way to the stadium?

Parking in the Church Road Car park was easy to find, but really difficult to get away from. It took nearly an hour to leave the multi-storey as the exit procedure was so slow.

Where did you eat on your away day and was it good value?

I ate at a local Chicken burger bar which was reasonably priced and quite fast.

What did you think of the food and drink available inside the ground?

Appalling. From a visiting fans point of view the single concessionary outlet inside the ground, the no alcohol for away fans policy and the no flags policy were all negatives, discriminatory and I felt unnecessary.

What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?

We had a large area with good unimpeded vision.

What was the atmosphere like during the match?

Home fan were pretty quite most of the time. Ipswich support was loud and jovial. That probably reflected the run of the play.

How friendly were the home fans out of 10?

0/10 – I’m elderly and was abused after the match by young supporters who felt it was appropriate to wish harm to me!

How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?

Easy to leave the stadium, horrendous to leave the car park.

How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?

£80-£100. It was an expected amount. I would have spent more at the club had the food and drink outlet been better, and offered more.

Would you recommend this away day to other fans?

This is the only club that I have visited where I didn’t feel welcomed by club or home supporters. I think the club should take responsibility for that.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about your day?

Watford need to think about the welcome they offer to away support, provide decent facilities for them, encourage them, expecting and accepting that they will show allegiance to their team. They need to engage with them, demonstrate that they value them and not discriminate against them. Then maybe Watford supporters would take the example and not abuse away support. Everyone expects banter amongst supporters in the ground. Everyone expects and accepts rivalry; but I do not expect to be abused outside the ground. Improved stewarding and policing of home supporters should be considered.

Why did you choose to go to this game and why were you looking forward to it?

Chose the game because it was only an hour drive from home and never been to Vicarage Road before.

How did you travel to the game and how easy was it?

By car. Very simple to get to the ring road and close to the stadium but roads are at a standstill next to the ground.

If you drove, was it easy to find car parking and make your way to the stadium?

We parked in the Premier Inn car park – a 10/15 minute walk.

Which pubs did you go to before the game and what was the atmosphere like?

We didn’t and wished we did – there is no alcohol sold to away fans inside the ground – a beginners error!

Where did you eat on your away day and was it good value?

Outside the ground there is a busy chippy, though we ate right outside the away fans entrance where there was a burger van.

What did you think of the food and drink available inside the ground?

No alcohol for away fans – just had some coffees and coca-colas. At least you were allowed to keep the lid.

What did you think of the away end and your view of the game?

View was good. The seat numbering is unusual because we got EE expecting to be half way up but we were two rows from the front. Generous allocation (10% of capacity) for away fans. I liked being on the end rather than the side.

What was the atmosphere like during the match?

Good away support. You’re put next to what seems like the family stand so the fan ‘banter’ is a bit limited.

How friendly were the home fans out of 10?

10/10 – had a chat with a few on the way to the ground while wearing the Saints scarf.

How easy did you find it to get away from the stadium after the game?

Got stuck for half an hour getting on the main route out to the motorway – but that’s to be expected.

How much did you spend in total on this away day? Was it good value for money?

Four tickets – adults £30 each. £5 each on burgers. Parking £5. Good value for an away win!

Would you recommend this away day to other fans?

Yes – pleasant ground. Good view.
